Monday is open mic night on the Chico Feo stage, while weekends see bands such as funk project iLLA ZiLLA (June 8) and alt-country rockers Whiskey Diablo (June 15).
A stone’s throw from Bert’s sits the verdant, tree-shaded patio of Chico Feo, which is Spanish for “the ugly boy.” Regulars adore the ramshackle “rum shack without the rum” vibe, its mismatched outdoor furniture, frequent live jams, and the ever-changing menu that owner Hank Weed terms “tropical equatorial” with nods to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Grenada. Winter’s noodle bowls and fiery goat-potato curries give way to summer’s zesty grilled fish tacos and smoked pork sandwiches with house kimchi and spicy sambal aioli (local tip: be sure to douse the bread with the house-made vinegar that sits in a bottle at the bar). Bottles and taps share the stage with cucumber-sake lemonade and seasonal bellinis (think basil-strawberry or orange-turmeric). By evening, the oyster-shell chandelier illuminates the courtyard as strains of folk, jazz, ukuleles, and even horn sections draw in the crowds.
Open Monday-Thursday, noon-2 a.m. & Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 a.m. 122 E. Ashley Ave., (843) 296-7155, chicofeos.com
