The Party: The annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival returned to Boone Hall Plantation for its 35th year. With 80,000 pounds of Charleston’s beloved bivalve on hand, the festivities spanned from midmorning until the sun began to set, complete with the legendary oyster-shucking and -eating contests and live music from The Piedmont Boys on the main stage. The VIP tent was outfitted with a hookah bar from Tabbuli, and the festival boasted a “food court” with bites from local eateries such as Hyman’s Seafood and Rebel Taqueria for the less oyster-inclined.
Highlight: Father-son duo Tres and Cat Hundertmark taking first and second place in the oyster-shucking contest
Overheard: “In all my life I’ve never seen so many oysters in one place!”
Beneficiaries: Ronald McDonald House, Hollings Cancer Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and Charleston County Schools Science Materials Resource Center
