The theatrical tradition was reinstated in March with a contemporary twist on the tragedy King Lear

Performing in Ashley Hall’s “Shakespeare at the Historic Bear Cave” series, student actors portray Nick Bottom and other characters during a June 1911 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Founded in 1909 in downtown Charleston, the private school for girls was formerly owned by the Witte family, who built a cave to serve as the home of their pet bear, Fredrick. For more than a century, the Shakespeare series cast Ashley Hall students in some of the playwright’s best-known works, including Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest, using the outdoor space as a backdrop. Ashley Hall reinstated the theatrical tradition this March, presenting a rendition of the tragedy King Lear set in contemporary times.
