When Charleston native Leslie McCravy was murdered in 2007, her parents and friends pledged to honor the 25-year-old’s memory by helping those she loved most—animals. Armed with a $100 starter check, the Leslie McCravy 5K Memorial Run/Walk committee approached Pet Helpers with hopes of raising money for the no-kill shelter. The first race, held on Folly Beach in 2009, netted nearly $20,000 in donations. This year, the McCravys also joined with Liza’s Lifeline of South Carolina, which provides funds and education for victims of domestic abuse like Leslie and arranges foster care for their pets while owners transition. “Leslie was a beautiful, caring girl,” says Debbie McCravy, Leslie’s mother. “We are determined to make this race big, and we’ve only begun.”
The third annual Leslie McCravy Memorial 5K Run/Walk: Saturday, May 14, 8 a.m. Edwin S. Taylor Pier, 101 East Arctic Ave., Folly Beach. $30-$25, $10 child under 13 before May 1.
