Art Smart
Help us complete our list of the city’s most influential artists by voting on your 10 favorites
We’re thrilled that our May 2015 Arts Issue has arrived, and with it the feature “Charleston’s 40 Most Influential Visual Artists (1670-2015).” For the piece, we selected the first 30—from Henrietta Johnston (1674-1729), the first professional female artist in America; to Louis Remy Mignot (1831-1870), the only Southerner among the landscape painters of the Hudson River School; to William M. Halsey (1915-1999), the modernist namesake of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
But given that art is so subjective, we want our readers to determine the final 10. Click below to vote on your favorites from among a list of 29 visual artists who were born and/or have worked in the Lowcountry (think painters such as Jill Hooper, West Fraser, and Mary Whyte), plus a write-in option. With the diverse talents present on the scene today, it’s sure to be a tough call, but a fun and rewarding endeavor.
