The upscale eatery offers fine-dining staples, plus a variety of coal-roasted plates for sharing
This live-fire restaurant from the folks behind Mount Pleasant’s Community Table and Kiki & Rye rose from the ashes at 72 Cannon Street. In 2011, arson destroyed the original two-story house, which was rebuilt with an upscale restaurant in mind and opened in early February. The hottest seats at Southbound (literally) surround the oak-fired hearth and grill in the first-floor dining room, accented with white marble tables, burnished brass fixtures, and emerald green Moroccan tile. For a romantic dinner for two, ask for a table on the intimate terrace beyond the swanky upstairs bar or out front on stationary front porch swings that catch the breeze. Gems on the menu include the steak tartare starter, served with smoked egg and grilled toast with miso butter, and the house-made cavatelli topped with braised rabbit sugo, beech mushrooms, and mint. Other fine dining staples, such as foie gras, sweetbreads, and a dry-aged New York strip (picture below right), and their place among shareable appetizers, including coal-roasted potatoes and Spanish octopus. southboundchs.com
