Mostly the domain of Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) employees, students, and the occasional outpatient, the Friday morning market on the hospital campus is almost 100 percent about veggies. And while there tends to be only a few farms represented—Freeman Produce along with Fields Pinckney & Hammond were set up when we visited—they are winners through and through. Wandering about tented tables with wooden crates turned on their sides like cornucopias spilling forth mounds of green peanuts, piles of potatoes, and tsunamis of greens, you nearly get a vitamin contact high and surge of virtuous living by just browsing. “You like my tablecloths?” asks Rose Freeman when her booth and harvest are praised. “They say presentation brings the people!” She’s right. Most shoppers are there on a mission and scoot off, but that works, considering the locale. In addition to loading up on farm fare, look for the Fields group’s muscadine wine, homemade bars of soap, fresh-pressed juices from Angel Blends, and, on hot days, frozen treats from King of Pops.
