Ask an Expert: There is a weed popping up in my yard that resembles a tiny mimosa tree. What do I do?

“That’s a broadleaf weed called ‘chamber bitter’ (Phyllanthus urinaria), and because it’s an annual, catching it before it sets seed is key. You can try hand-pulling the plant at the seedling stage, making sure to get the entire taproot. For larger areas, use a post-emergent herbicide made for your grass type. To prevent future infiltrations, mulch your garden beds—this keeps light from triggering seed germination. You can find more detailed info in Clemson Extension’s online Home and Garden Information Center.” —Joan McDonald, garden editor
