Whether you’re looking for laughs or award-winning drama, the final days of Piccolo Spoleto have plenty of stellar performances in store


It’s that glorious time of year when Piccolo Spoleto packs local venues with shows by performing artists from across the country. So forget the chores and errands and instead fill your calendar with theater, comedy, music, and more. Here, four events that promise to make you glad you did:

June 1 & 9-12
Proof

Midtown/Sheri Grace Productions delves into this tale of a young woman coping with the death of her famous mathematician father. She faces an estranged sister’s arrival while developing a relationship with a former student of her dad’s who’s seeking valuable work in the 103 notebooks he left behind. Charleston Acting Studio, 915 E. Folly Rd. Wednesday & Friday, 7pm; Thursday, 8pm; Saturday, 6pm; Sunday, 5pm. $18.

June 4-11
The Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company

Here’s your chance to see the long-form improv group—who’s appeared on Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart—dish up a show based on audience suggestions. Theatre 99, 280 Meeting St., Ste. B. Friday & Saturday, 7:30pm (June 11 only) & 10:30pm; Sunday & Monday, 8:30pm; Wednesday & Thursday, 10pm; $16.

Spotlight Concert Series: Eleganza

Rhiannon Giddens Laffan of the Carolina Chocolate Drops pairs with Cheryse McLeod Lewis to share the art of the duet through spirituals, opera, musical theater, and  more. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 18 Thomas St. Wednesday, 6pm. $11.

June 11
Festival Finale: MotownMadness

Begin this celebration with kids’ activities, local eats, and a variety of musical and dance performances. Then get ready for Motown grooving as the Charleston Symphony Orchestra takes on hits by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and The Supremes, and The Four Tops. Hampton Park, 30 Mary Murray Blvd. Saturday, 6-10pm. Free.
